above, left to right, on the grid I created that acts as a replica to the cinema screen perferations; the letter 'B' is set from the font, Albertus. The orange lines indicate the outline of the letter form. they are constructed ONLY between points on the grid so the finished form is quite angular and definitive.
the result is a letter that snaps well onto the grid and retains the feel of the classic albertus font.
following on secret history development, and niceness of pencil marking to figure all of that out - had a bash at FF. also havnt been able to use illustrator yet. this is blessing in disguise as the zoopraxiscope stuff came about due to lack of technology to hand
as was pointed out in the last penguin session, that weren't no greek alphabet. how embarrassing. oh well, here are the new, and hopefully improved workings for the title using the same concept.
the one below shows some combinations of letters using the greek serif's that exist in the real alphabet. i'm not sure whether i prefer it sans or not yet.

these are all [bad] pictures i've taken of some related film media. i'm looking for recurring patterns, colours, forms that i can use as a grid to set the type into and then drop on the zoopraxiscope and animate.
zoopraxiscopes were spawned from zoetropes. they were the foundations of motion cinema projection as they were usually painted on glass disks and projected on to a wall by a static light and by turning the mechanism connected to the disk.
i made one on a record player. these are the calculations i did to figure it out
this is the grid, and the video i made. [note the brilliant radio 4 play on alien life by arthur c. clarke on in the background]
the grid is made up of the 33 frames i calculated to be visible with the 25 frame/sec camera as a static-ish bouncing 'ball'. the video shows the effect of a lower / higher revolution on the record player, and proves that my estimations are more or less accurate.
i did all this so that i could use the zoopraxiscope grid as the foundation to put my animated letters in and actually animate them.
this means i will make 26 letter zoopraxiscopes. i will then put the individual frames of the grid into a straight line and then build up each cover with the titles spelled out in this font [?]
